July 27 Time FlysTime Flys When You Are Having Fun!
It's been a while since I have posted anything. Sorry for that!
Updates on each of the kids -
Aaron - Lost his first wiggly tooth! He was so funny. It happened on a Tuesday and the Monday before he was whining that it hurt and it was bugging him. He was pulling on it and it started to bleed. He pulled his little fingers away and was so surprised to see blood - I thought he was going to faint. He freaks out yelling, "I'm bleeding!" and throws himself on the floor. I explained to him that it was ok - sometimes that happens. It was so loose but he would not let me touch it. I told him to just pull it out and he informed me it was too slippery and he could not get a hold of it. I told him to go get some TP and pull it out. He did not want to pull on it - he was completely freaked out. He went to bed that night with the tooth still in his head. The next night - I called home after work on the drive home and Aaron got on the phone and said, "Guess what? I pulled out my wigglely tooth and I didn't use toilet paper!" He was soooo excited! The tooth fairy brought him a whistle. Thanks Tooth Fairy! I don't know if I mentioned this in one of the other blogs but my dad told Aaron when you lose a tooth you get a whistle. You know when a child loses a tooth sometime they whistle when they talk. Aaron assoicated this with the Tooth Fairy bringing him a whistle. Thanks Dad!
Brandon is the same. Typical teenage drama. I can't wait for school to start!!!! His girlfriend when to Mexico with her church youthgroup for two weeks - you'd have thought he was a lost puppy dog. He didn't know what to do with himself. He did pass all his summer school classes!!! WOOO HOOOOO Good Job Brand!!!
Jeremy is doing ok. He has had a couple of bumps in the road lately. He had a melt down last week - just being "trapped" in the house - it finally got to him. He really needs to go back to school. We found in his room smoked cigarettes. He tells me they are from a while ago and he hasn't smoked for a week at least. HMMMM - I hope he is telling me the truth. I gave him the lecture on how addicting smoking is - not to mention the cost and the smell and the new state law in Iowa. I pointed out to him that he was closing doors if he becomes a smoker. I pointed out the stuggles he has watch me and Pat and his dad have gone through trying to quit time and time again. I asked him why and he did not really have an answer for it. He has a couple of friends that smoke and peer pressure was getting to him. He says he is not going to smoke anymore. I sure hope so. I made him write an essay on smoking and I have included it in this blog. Let me know what you think and I will pass on the comments to Jeremy.
Pat is doing great - other then the sexy sunburn he got this past weekend. The sock lines are the big turn on for me and the burnt knees. (Wolf whistle)
Not much else here. Pat is cooking dinner and it is almost done. So I will go for now. I will try to post more often. I know I said that before.
Below you will find Jeremy's essay. I think most of this is cut and paste too - like Brandon's but at least Jer knew to change the font to make it all uniform. Hee Hee
Smoking the cons without the pros
Don’t ever start its hard to quit, you know what I’m talking about yes smoking. I’m writing this paper because I smoked and my mom didn’t like it. Smoking is bad because many of the chemicals in cigarettes, like nicotine and cyanide, are actually poisons that can kill in high enough doses. Smoking also restricts blood vessels; it can prevent oxygen from getting to the skin — which is why smokers often appear pale. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like asthma, become sicker if they smoke. That’s a couple of reasons why smoking is bad for you. Whites 21.9%, African Americans 23.0%, Hispanics 15.2%, American Indians/Alaska, Natives 32.4%, Asian Americans 10.4% these are different percentages of different races that smoke. Each year about 438,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to cigarette smoking. Parents are the biggest influences on their teen children. Some people start to smoke because they see other people do it and think it looks cool but its not. Other people try it because friends pressure them in to it. That’s how I started I was with my friend Dalton and we went walking around and he had cigarettes in his pocket and pulled the pack out. Then he asked me if I wanted one n at first I said no but Dalton n jimmy talked me into it. Smoking isn’t all that kills people Secondhand smoke kills about 3,000 nonsmokers each year from lung cancer. Also Secondhand smoke causes up to 300,000 lung infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in infants and young children each year. Secondhand smoke causes wheezing, coughing, colds, earaches, and asthma attacks. Every day in the United States alone, approximately 3,000 kids under the age of 18 start smoking. Also Every day 1,200 Americans die from smoking-related illnesses. Smoking-related illnesses claim more American lives than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs combined. Another interesting fact is People who smoke a pack a day die on average 7 years earlier than people who have never smoked. Tobacco use is directly responsible for more than 25 causes of death. Estimates are that 4 million people will die of tobacco-related illnesses worldwide this year; by the 2020’s, the death toll will increase to 10 million deaths per year. That’s a lot of people. 351,564 American children under age 18 will start smoking in 2001 alone; of these, 112,501 will eventually die from a smoking related illness. Cigarettes contain disgusting things that you would never think about putting in your body. For example, cigarettes contain tar, carbon monoxide. The tobacco in cigarettes also contains nicotine which is the drug that makes smoking addictive. Studies indicate that nonsmokers are also inversely affected by environmental tobacco smoke. There are 4000 chemicals in tobacco with 100 identified poisons and 63 known drugs which cause cancer. Cigarette use continued to grow at a rapid pace and peaked at over 40 percent of the nation’s adolescent-and-older population by the mid-1960. The great majority of tobacco users smoke cigarettes, inhaling the nicotine-laden smoke into their lungs. A smaller percentage of users smoke cigars and pipes, and generally do not inhale, since cigar and pipe tobacco is potent enough for the nicotine in the smoke they produce to be readily absorbed in the mouth. These are some of the diseases that smoking brings to people cancers of the lungs, mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, uterus, cervix, kidney, bladder, and some forms of leukemia, Cardiovascular disease, heart attack, fatal heart failure, and stroke. Now you see how smoking kills. Also I know that I will never smoke again. So you should never start because it is hard to stop.

July 05 The Great Advice I got from Little BroHappy Saturday everyone. Hope your 4th of July was a good one. Here in Bettendorf we have a HUGH parade and fireworks display every year. The parade was pretty good and the fireworks were awesome.
I tried to make an angel food cake for the first time and it was ok - not as good as ones I have had before. I don't know what I missed? Mom said I should have poked holes in the top before adding the frosting. I will have to try again.
Ok and now for the great advice I spoke of in the title of this blog. Have any of you heard of Dave Ramsey? Check out his web site at http://www.daveramsey.com/ This guy is a financial genius. Matt turned me on to this guy and I have been looked at his site on a regular basis and passing on bits of information to coworkers and friends about him. He has a monthly budget that is easy to follow and I am trying to pin down my hubby long enough to go through it with him. Pat would rather bury his head in the sand then deal with the bills. Unless of course the satillite (sp?) service is turned off for lack of payment - then he gets all up in the bill thing. Not really - he has his moments when he is concerned and does help, but it is not a habit unfortunately for both of us. I also want to tweak the monthly budget thing and turn into a biweekly thing. I think that will help both Pat and I. Anyways - you have to check out this site and pass it on to others!
Not much else going on here - its laundry day and I have mid term essays to write for my real estate law class. I should be moving on - the laundry waits for no one. June 29 Lying to your mother - think again!Ok - check this one out. Brandon (15yrs old) has to do summer school this summer. He played around his freshman year and now is paying the price for it. Anyways, after class one day last week he decide that he would go hang out with friends instead of just coming home like I told him to. He knew I was at work and he thought Pat was at work also. Hee Hee. I called home to check on the kids like I always do around 1:00 PM - and Pat tells me that Brandon is not home and assumed I had let him go somewhere after school. I call Brandon's cell phone (these a blessing and a curse by the way) and I say where are you in my really nice mommie voice. His reply was I am outside getting ready to mow the lawn - didn't hear the phone ring. He knows I call the house phone to make sure they are there. I say really because Dad is home and he said you are not there. "Oh" was the reply I got - I said, "Now what Brand?" He said, "How long am I grounded for?" I said, "Get your butt home and I will talk to you when I am off work." I was to mad to talk to him right then. I thought and thought all afternoon at work what to do with this one. How do I get him to understand that he has not only disobeyed me but totally made himself look like a complete ass. I decided to make him write me an essay on lying. For those of you who do not know - Brandon has a reading disability and he has an IEP when it comes to his schooling. An IEP basically is a learning contract between Brandon and me and the school. Brandon gets the help he needs and the school gets what they need from Brandon. For example all Brandon's tests can be read to him. Anyways the essay that he produced lets me know that it is working. I have included the essay here for all of you to read. Let me know what you think and I will pass on the comments to Brandon.
Lying
This is a 3 paragraphs about lying. If you lie to your parents and they catch you, you can get in a lot of trouble. The definition of lying is the telling of lies; untruthfulness. Young children ages 4-5 often make up stories and tell tall tales. Although teens tell lies to avoid doing something or deny responsibility for their actions. Teens also lie to protect their privacy or to help them feel psychologically separate and independent from their parents. Teens often feel that lying is the easiest way to get out of something that they have done wrong. Teens use lying to cover up another more serious problem like drugs or alcohol. There are seven ways to tell that someone is lying and they are no eye contact, change in voice, unusual body language, something sounds fishy, overly defensive, changes subject easily, humor or sarcasm. Fear is a common motivator for lying. There are also some children and adolescents who don’t care about lying or taking advantage of. Lying is the number one reason that people lose trust. (Lies are like dominos - one lie can knock out whole relationships, destroy entire aspects of your life or even limit your future in unforeseeable ways.) Lies can damage your self image and cause you to look at things a lot different. This is 3 paragraphs about lying
I know he cut and pasted this - but if you could see his past essays and his work that he has done. You would be impressed. Unfortunately I do not have any examples of his past work, but I can tell you this is a great improvement. Brandon at least was able to put this in some kind of logically order so that it made sense. Now I just have to teach him to how to change the font size and style. LOL - He was also grounded by the way and had a long list of chores to do on top of the essay. I plan to use this punishment in the future and maybe tweak it a little - like it the future essays will have to be 5 paragraphs with two sources cited.
I think he did learn something about lying from this and I think it will be one that he will remember in the future. June 18 This week in the Ritter famNot much new to report. Classes started for me. Good Lord - its alot of work. I guess that is my excuse for not bloggin in a while. Matt and fam was in town last week for little bit. They spent most of their vaca in the Dells. The flooding in Iowa has left alot of us feeling damp and really tired of rain. It has disrupted the whole state in more ways then one. Now the water is moving south so all the southern states will get hit next. We gave my dad a flag pole for fathers day. He was pretty excited about that. My aunt pasted away. She has been ill for some time now and is in a much better place - my uncle is holding his own - i am told. Boys are doing fine. Brandon started summer school and aaron is finishing his up. Jeremy was the only one who was reprived of this summer school thing. Pat is working a lot as am I. It has been crazy at work but we got word that they are hiring a third FA Packager so that will help alot. Well, I need to go get these kids in bed and get myself ready also. I am so tired I can barely type. Hope everyone is well. I will try to blog something more interesting this weekend. Later Gators!!!! June 03 Nothing to diff hereNot much to say today - so I will just go with whatever comes to mind.
Classes start this week - online classes this term - should be interesting. I am taking Law Office Management and Real Estate Law.
Work has been crazy - it is nonstop because of the new start and everyone is trying to get their FAFSA done before the deadline. I don't understand why people put that kind of thing off. It is not that hard - they make it seem like rocket science or something. I help one girl today do her FAFSA and her comment to me when she was done was "That was it?" Yes, that is it.
I asked Aaron last night what he thinks daddy would want for Father's Day. He said, "Hmmmmm, I think he would like the Kungfoo Panda video game." I said, "Is that really what daddy wants or what Aaron wants?" He said, "Daddy of course - I'm gonna go tell him." What a goof ball.
We had a bat in our building yesterday. I went out my office door and walked about 40 feet to the copy room - got a couple reams of copy paper and started to walk back. I see this brown thing on the floor and get about 4 feet from it - trying to figure out what the heck it was. It lifts is little yucky head and looks at me. I scream and go back the way I came. Our DOT (Director of Thermostate) chased it around for awhile and finally caught the thing in a box. It was quite the excitement. Yuck I hate bats!
Well, not really much else to report. Jeremy just got home from his dads - so I am going to chat with him for a while.
Love to all!!!! Thanks for visiting!
